- Doctor Supervised Lifestyle & Dietary Modifications Programme for Diabetics
Lifestyle, especially diet, is and must be a significant part of management of all stages of diabetes - from diabetes prevention, prediabetes to optimisation of management of established diabetic conditions. The sole or over dependence on just diabetic medications without concurrent conscious effort on lifestyle and diet modifications to manage one's diabetic condition would often lead to poor control, risks of progression and complications of diabetes. Dr Chan's medical practice is focused on providing medical supervision, education, support and programmes for people who are committed to making lifestyle and dietary modifications to prevent or improve the management of diabetes and other chronic diseases where lifestyle and food play a significant role.
Programme Goals*
1) Improvement of diabetes condition through customised, doctor supervised lifestyle & diet modification.
2) Reversal of severity of the diabetes condition where possible through lifestyle & diet modification.
3) Achieving good diabetes control through guided lifestyle & diet modification, adjusting the need for and dosage of diabetes medication.
4) Reduction of risks and risk factors of developing diabetes complications through physician guided lifestyle & diet modification.
*These are the goals of the programme, each individual patient needs to set their own goals in discussion with the doctor. Whether the goals are achievable would vary from patient to patient and also depend on many factors including the duration and severity of the underlying diabetic condition.

People & Patients who would benefit from these programmes include:
(i) Diabetics who want to improve the control of their diabetic conditions through doctor managed lifestyle and diet modifications with a goal of adjusting the need for and dosage of diabetes medication*
(ii) People who are newly diagnosed with diabetes or prediabetes who are not on medications yet and who want to attempt to use lifestyle and diet to control their diabetes without immediately starting or depending solely on diabetic medications.
(iii) People who are at higher risks of developing diabetes (eg. history of diabetes during previous pregnancies or in the family) and who want to be vigilant and make a conscious effort to stave off diabetes.
(iv) Diabetic patients who want to use lifestyle and dietary changes to improve their diabetic control and lower their risks of diabetic complications such as heart diseases, strokes, kidney failures and other end organ complications.
*It is possible to improve control of diabetes through committed and concerted lifestyle and dietary modifications and consequently adjusting the need for and dosage of diabetes medication. However reducing or stopping diabetic medications should not be the primary goal of any diabetes management programme and may not be achievable for some despite their best efforts at lifestyle modifications. The severity of their pre-existing diabetic condition as well as other factors determines the degree of improvement possible through at lifestyle and dietary modification. The goal of diabetes management, including lifestyle modifications, should always be about controlling the progression of the disease and reducing the risks of diabetic complications.
Any attempts to adjust the need for and dosage of diabetes medication through significant lifestyle and dietary modifications must be communicated to and should be supervised by doctors.
